Super Rare Games is an independent video game publisher and distributor. It is recognised for reprinting existing indie titles, generally ones that are mostly or solely digital, on the Nintendo Switch. “Heaven’s Machine” was the Super Rare Shorts series’ first fully physical game (via Nintendo Life). You take the role of Jack, an explorer on a procedurally constructed cosmic train speeding toward heaven.
Each stage is a frenzied shoot ’em up, with each level and its foes being randomly generated. As a result, each level, and even each playing, is a unique experience. The disadvantage is that you may occasionally find yourself in a room with no cover and much too many foes. Although the reviews were mixed, there is much to be said for what Super Rare Games is accomplishing. The Shorts series focuses on indie developers that create small-scale games that would not be considered by a larger firm. It’s effectively creating the video game equivalent of a short story market, where unproven talents can refine their abilities and create an audience. That is an objectively positive development.
Unlike several of Super Rare’s previous titles, “Heaven’s Machine” will never be available on the eShop, and only 2,000 physical copies were made. You’ll have to buy one on the secondary market if you want one right now. If you can track it down.
